A real lawn is a tough thing to keep alive in San Marcos. Triple-digit afternoons stretch from June into September, and when Edwards Aquifer levels drop, the city's drought-stage watering rules can limit sprinklers to one day a week or less. St. Augustine and Bermuda don't stay green on that schedule.
Artificial grass removes the problem instead of managing it. There's nothing to water, mow, edge, or fertilize, and the color doesn't fade when the rain stops. After a storm, it drains instead of turning into a mud pit, so the yard is usable again within minutes.
San Marcos Turf Pros handles the whole project, from tearing out the old lawn to brushing the last blade into place. We spend most of our time on the part nobody sees, the compacted and graded base under the turf, because that's what keeps a lawn smooth and well drained years from now. Some people still call it astro turf. Whatever name you use, today's products look and feel far closer to real grass than the stuff you remember from old ball fields.

A practice green a few steps from your back door. We build custom putting greens with true roll, subtle breaks, and chipping fringe that ties into the rest of the yard.

Durable, low-upkeep turf for apartment communities, HOAs, storefronts, patios, and play areas. Trim your water and landscaping bills and keep the property looking sharp.

We come out, measure, look at slope and drainage, and ask how you plan to use the space. You'll see turf samples and get a written price.
Step 2
The old lawn comes out, the ground is graded, and we compact a crushed-rock base built to drain. Everything that follows depends on this step.
Step 3
We roll out the turf, trim it to your borders, join the seams so they disappear, and fasten the edges.
Step 4
Infill is worked into the fibers, the blades are brushed upright, and we haul everything away. Your lawn is ready the day we finish.

| New sod | Artificial turf | |
|---|---|---|
| The first few weeks | Needs frequent watering to root, which is hard under drought-stage limits | Ready to use the day it's installed |
| Watering after that | Regular irrigation through the warm months | An occasional rinse |
| Mowing and edging | Weekly for most of the year | None |
| Fertilizer and weed control | Several rounds a year | None |
| Late summer | Often thin, tan, or dormant | The same green it was in spring |
| Heavy rain | Soft and muddy, especially on clay | Drains and dries quickly |
| Shade and heavy use | Wears thin and needs patching | Stays full and even |
Sod costs less on installation day, but the watering, mowing, and patching bills keep coming for as long as you own it. Turf costs more up front and then mostly asks to be left alone.
San Marcos sits right on the edge of the Hill Country, and your soil depends on which side of I-35 you live on. East of the interstate, most yards are heavy blackland clay that swells when it's wet, cracks when it's dry, and stays sticky for days after rain. West of it, the ground turns to thin, rocky soil over limestone, often on a slope.
Neither one is friendly to a lawn, and each needs a different approach under the turf. On clay, we excavate deeper and build a thicker, well-compacted base so the surface stays stable as the soil moves. On rock, we grade what's there, bring in base material to smooth it out, and anchor the turf so it holds on a hillside.
During your estimate, we'll look at what's actually under your yard and explain how we'd build the base for it.

We install artificial turf across San Marcos, from the older streets near downtown and Texas State to newer neighborhoods like Blanco Vista, Kissing Tree, La Cima, and Trace. Our crews also work in Martindale, Redwood, and Maxwell.

San Marcos Turf Pros exists for one reason: turf that still looks right long after the installers leave. We get there with patient base work, products matched to how each yard is used, and crews who clean up like it's their own home.
If you're outside the San Marcos area, our affiliated turf teams serve homeowners in New Braunfels, Kyle and Buda, and Schertz and Cibolo with the same installation standards.
Every yard is priced by the square foot, and the total depends on the size of the area, the turf you pick, and how much base work the ground needs. We measure on site and give you a free written quote.
Astro turf is the name many people use for any synthetic grass, but it started out as a brand of sports-field carpet. Modern landscape turf has softer, multi-toned blades and a thatch layer, so it looks much more like a natural lawn.
A quality product on a properly built base holds up for many years. UV-stabilized fibers and good drainage are what keep it looking fresh.
Any surface in full Texas sun warms up, and turf is no exception. We can suggest cooler-running turf and infill, and a quick spray from the hose cools it down in seconds.
Yes. Clay moves as it gets wet and dries out, so we dig deeper and build a thicker compacted base that keeps the surface even and gives water somewhere to go.
Yes. Pet turf drains quickly, rinses clean, and doesn't need fertilizer or weed killer. Plenty of San Marcos dog owners switch to get rid of mud and worn-out patches.
Most home projects take one to three days, depending on square footage and site prep. Your quote will include a schedule.
Not much. Rinse it now and then, brush the spots that get the most foot traffic, and blow off leaves.
Rules differ from one HOA to the next. We can give you product specs and samples to include with your approval request, and we won't schedule work until you have the go-ahead.
